THE FLORIDA HOMES a look at what to expect from your new Tampa Bay Home. If you're moving to the Tampa bay area but aren't quite sure what to expect in your home, consider the following a crash course in Florida home building.

LESSON 1: Basements are very rare, and the reason is simple: the state's water table is too high. Homeowners would have to keep the pumps running to enjoy this extra space.

LESSON 2: Stucco, a mixture of san and concrete, is an exterior texture used on the majority of Florida homes. Slathered atop concrete blocks, it's part of what's known as the "Palm Beach" look.

LESSON 3: The buzzwords used for most new Florida homes are "open" and "airy." The majority of new homes here feature vaulted or high flat ceilings in the main living areas. There's more use of skylights, glass blocks, and high, arched windows to help bring the outdoors in.

While the "Palm Beach" and Mediterranean styles are most prevalent, Florida's new home market is responding to an increased demand for more traditionally styled homes. Following a Victorian for Old South look, or a hybrid of the two, these homes may feature hardwood floors, wrap-around porches and lots of crown moulding.

Tampa bay communities offering this look include Brookside in Wesley Chapel; Silver Oaks Village planned for Tampa's Westchase. To get an idea of what Tampa Bay's new home market looks like; the following photographs showcase their choices.
